Who We Are:

Formed in 2019 under the Deputy Commissioner of Employee Relations, the Health and Wellness Section was created to combat mental health stigma, create mental and physical health resources as well as educate and support our members in all aspects of wellness.

In this section we have many moving but equally important parts:

The Critical Incident and Stress Management Program - Psychologists and mental health experts who perform Critical Incident Debriefings after a critical incident, heavy job or a stressful occurrence. This is done to check in on the possibly effected member to see how they are dealing with the stressful incident. This helps to reduce the stigma behind seeing a psychologist and introduces members who may not be familiar with a clinical psychological setting to hopefully be more comfortable entering into one in the future if needed. Individual Support Appointments are also available at any time if requested. In addition they provide group sessions for various groups all of which can be found on our home page.

Employee Assistance Unit - The Employee Assistance Unit is comprised of Certified Peer Counselors who are both uniformed and civilian who’s role it is to provide support and education for members. EAU are the listening ears to call if you have any questions, concerns or need someone non-judgmental to talk to about anything you may be going through. They are a compassionate resource that understands what you go through because they are you. Members of EAU also respond in person to critical incidents where people may need someone to talk to as well. They also have 3 Therapy K9 dogs to assist in this task.

Peer Support Program - The Peer Support Program members are both uniformed and civilian members of the service who have received a basic introduction to mental health, communication skills, crisis communication, resilience and the resources that are offered by the department. They are over 400 strong and are members of the service who are doing the job each and every day. They are in the commands daily and are the person who is the listening ear within the command. They are tasked with educating members within the commands about the many departmental and non-departmental resources available to them.

Wellness Education - The health and wellness section provides education in Fitness, Nutrition, Mindfulness and Resilience. We go out and conduct presentations at trainings as well as on the command level to help members help themselves.

Financial Wellness Support - Members of the service can learn about debt, finances, investments etc and help get themselves out of dept as well as join our NYPD Financial club.

Retirement Wellness Services - Many members don’t have any guidance about their pension and retirement, or they wait until it’s too late to ask. That’s why we have a retirement coordinator who can sit down and answer all of these questions for you and help guide you through the process.

Fitness and Nutrition Support - The Health and Wellness section will help you get started on a sustainable fitness and nutrition plan to help you get better and feel better. There is no time too soon to start thinking about your health and fitness.

Social Media - We spread messages of education and events on our social media page, which can be viewed below. Check us out to stay updated.
